Back in the ‘70s, my always-stylish mother owned a long black evening dress with a bold poppy pattern. It was smashing. The graphics made a statement, and my mom really owned that. So, the dynamic between boldness and femininity was the first thing I thought of when I saw the new limited-edition Lela Rose Poppy Collection for Velocio.
‘You Want to be Part of That’
Lela herself is more about pedaling around New York City in regular clothes and heels than road cycling. But she brings the same care-free sensibility and desire to encourage women to ride bicycles comfortably and in style to both worlds.
“My goal,” she says, “has always…been to glamorize cycling because I think that will create the feeling of inclusion – you want to be a part of that.”
The Poppy collection is a follow-up to the designer’s sophisticated and popular Zinnia collaboration with Velocio last summer. It too reflected the kind of “go big or go home” philosophy that people who appreciate a distinctive look connect with.
No Shrinking Violets
But let’s get to the features: I particularly appreciate the Velocio line, co-founded by Kristy Scrymgeour, for its fit and feel and for the makers’ commitment to quality materials and continuous product research and development. (The company also makes cycling apparel for men.)
The Poppy collection is based on Velocio’s ES top and (bib short) bottom, which are designed to keep you pedaling in comfort whether you’re taking a spin around the park or spending all day in the saddle. Moisture-wicking fabric and subtly vented side panels help keep you cool, reflective details help get you noticed and four back pockets, one that’s zippered and water-resistant, give you easy access to everything you need for your adventure on the road. On the bottom, there’s Italian Lycra that hugs your body, seamless microfiber for the bib straps, strategic placement of seams to prevent chafing and a high-density chamois. The leg bands grip without squeezing thanks to an ultralight silicone finish. There’s a coordinating wind vest, too.
Lela Rose Poppy Collection for Velocio, Jersey and Bib Short (sold as a set) $398, Coordinating Wind Vest, $179
