It’s all in the details. The summer 2016 Rapha x Liberty collection injects eye-catching fashion styling into the brand’s latest women’s cycling apparel collection.
A subtle, houndstooth print, along with an exposed front zipper on the jersey – calling to mind Azzedine Alaïa — lend a distinctive read that’s not quite like anything else out there right now. The five-piece collection is Rapha’s second with the venerable London department store.
The blue and green pattern is rooted in the 1970s, adapted from the Liberty archive of 40,000 prints and updated with reflective detailing for after-dark cycling visibility.
The collection is part of Rapha’s Souplesse range of high-performance clothing for training and racing in hot weather. So, it’s built for longer days in the saddle, but also has, to my eye, a sophisticated urban sensibility. The accessories, a cap and a silk scarf, certainly add a hint of elegance to any outing.
Like the first Rapha x Liberty collection, which includes clothes for both road and city cycling, and which remains in the women’s line, this one transcends the florals which are popularly associated with the Liberty name for an entirely modern look.
