Having a goal on the horizon is a potent motivator to start pedaling outdoors as soon as the weather breaks. So mark your calendars now for three free national cycling events for women coming this spring and summer. They’ll give you the opportunity to ride for fun and fitness in the supportive company of women who share your enthusiasm for bicycling. The events, part of a growing movement to get more women on bikes (hurray!), are also great on-ramps if you’re seeking to connect with the cycling community in your area.
Sunday, May 10 – CycloFemme
Now in its fourth year, CycloFemme is a grassroots global celebration of women on bikes. Founded by the website Girl Bike Love and the NYC-based design firm Language Dept., this ride encourages women at all levels everywhere to honor the past, present and future of women’s cycling by riding with family, friends and colleagues on Mother’s Day. Go to the CycloFemme website to find a ride in your area, or to register your own outing. Last year saw 303 events in 25 countries.
In NYC: Several different ride options are typically listed. View a video from one of last year’s NYC-based rides.
Sunday, May 31 – Specialized Women’s Ride Day
The bicycle company Specialized encourages women across the nation to ride together on local roads and trails by sponsoring training and workshops for Women’s Ride Day in major cities. In addition, Specialized dealers in many communities host rides. Cyclists of all levels, from beginner to more experience riders, are invited to join in.
In NYC: In the lead-up to the event, get ride-ready with workshops on topics like bike fit and DIY roadside repairs. Training commences indoors this week at T2 MultiSport in Manhattan and continues with outdoor rides hosted by Bicycle Habitat’s Soho store and Toga Bike Shop on the Upper West Side. View the complete schedule of NYC training events and workshops.
Also, RSVP here for a morning ride and free party in the evening Saturday, March 28, to celebrate launch of the Bicycle Habitat 2015 Women’s Cycling Program, which includes prep for Specialized Women’s Ride Day.
Sunday, July 26 – Rapha Women’s 100
The third annual global event, sponsored by the cycling apparel maker Rapha, challenges women to pedal 100 kilometers (62 miles) on a single day. Last year’s event included 364 rides in 58 countries. Riders who register at the Rapha Women’s 100 site and complete the journey receive a commemorative woven badge. Sign up online to find a ride near you or to register your own.
In NYC: Join training rides led by experienced female road cyclists on Sunday mornings. They depart from the Rapha Cycle Club in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District.
