Sheryl Yvette on Makeup that Survives the Ride

Move over Alexa Chung. Long before the cat eye became the must-have makeup look, Sheryl Yvette (above) ruled the liquid liner roost from the saddle of her pink, Hello Kitty cruiser bicycle.

The much-photographed city bicyclist, Brooklyn booster and fitness enthusiast who goes by the handle @bitchcakes on twitter, and who has rocked a a full-on vintage Hollywood glamor esthetic for more than 25 years, has the smudge-proof makeup for cycling formula down pat.

Sheryl’s make-up on her commute and during the many bicycling events in which she participates, is always immaculate. So as the summer mercury rises in New York City, I asked her to share her secrets to a stay-put look that resists running while pedaling.

It’s all in the base layer. Sheryl starts with waterproof Tarte Clean Slate 360º Creaseless Eye Primer ($19). Then she lines her lids, starting at the inner edge and ending with a cat-eye flick, using e.l.f. Liquid Eyeliner in black (99 cents). She says she swears by it because it’s smudge-proof, long-wearing and a great buy. The pièce de résistance: Elite #6 False Eyelashes (available at Duane Reade), which Sheryl says stand up to reapplication.

“Put the primer all over the lid, it will also set your eye shadow,” she advises. “This is good for 8 hours.”

Sheryl’s Look: I caught up with Sheryl early one morning recently at Grand Central Terminal. She had already locked up her bike, which she had ridden from her home in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, and was bound for the train to complete her commute to work.

“I’ve always liked girly girls and the retro look,” Sheryl notes, adding that she draws inspiration from her collection of more than 100 Barbie dolls. “A friend of mine calls me bad-ass Barbie, which I love.”

For traveling around town, Sheryl likes fast-fashion labels like American Apparel, Target and Payless. She mixes these with bicycling-specific pieces, sometimes including a cycling jersey, and, in the photos below, takes a cue from bike messengers with a bag by Chrome and a carabiner to hold her bike lock key and Citi Bike membership.
