photo books capture south african bicycle culture

These beautiful street portraits of everyday South African cyclists came across our desk recently and we are so impressed! Taken by Stan Engelbrecht and Nic Grobler over the course of two years, the best of over 500 bike portraits are now part of a three-book series. Engelbrecht  and Grobler, both Cape Town residents, love bikes––their bike portraits were taken along their own bike tour that covered nearly 4,000 miles.

From the authors:

Through this project we wish to give people a glimpse into each other live’s through a well-known object of movement, practicality and joy — the bicycle.

As we write this, Engelbrecht and Grobler are looking for funding via Kickstarter. There are only two days left to donate to their gorgeous project, so check it out. Each book in the series contains 55 portraits and next to each is a watercolor rendition by South African artist Gabrielle Raaf of the Google map location where it was taken. While the drive is still happening you can pre-order a single book for a contribution of $40 or all three for $80. Click on their Kickstarter page to make a pledge.

Update 12/8: This project was successfully funded.
