Fellow fans of Cleverhood rejoice. The outerwear brand that perfected the rain cape for bicycle commuting with a feature-packed combination of style and performance, has launched an airier version called Cleverlites.
At the recent Bike Expo New York, two features grabbed my attention. First, a couple of fun, new hi-viz colors (Devo Yellow and Glow Green!) join the current Cleverhood line-up.
Second, this version folds down into a compact mesh bag (below) that fits easily into your purse or bag, rendering everyday preparedness for unexpected showers a no-brainer.
The new capes, with a more minimalist design and value-oriented price tag compared with the original Cleverhood, come in two fabric options: ripstop nylon and brushed microfiber. They slip easily over your head, and are roomy enough to keep your backpack or cross-body bag dry. Additional features for cycling comfort: a cinch at the back of the neck adjusts the fit of the hood, a visor helps shield your face from raindrops, and thumb loops extend the cape over your lap for protection as you pedal. Reflective details add visibility.
The family-run Providence, RI company, founded five years ago by entrepreneur Susan Mocarski, sells its capes worldwide and its ethos runs both toward making high-quality products in the U.S. and supporting the livable cities movement by helping to encourage cycling. As part of its commitment, Cleverhood has developed the Cleverlite in collaboration with skilled craftspeople in the neighboring community of Fall River, MA, previously a textile capital, now seeking to re-invent itself.
