Cycling in Culottes is Cool

We’re all for spring swoosh, but mounting a bike in a midi skirt? Not so much. Enter culottes for cycling — half-short, half-pant trousers with tailored volume offering ample freedom of movement. A runway favorite, these calf-skimmers pair well with strappy sandals and Stan Smith sneakers alike, making them the ideal bottom for morning commutes and weekend errands on the bike.
It’s only fitting we wear them around town; Victorian ladies — the first to adopt the boy’s bloomer for women’s wear — sported culottes during tennis matches, cycling races and adventures on horseback. That kept things classy sans skirt, as it still does today.
Our favorite culottes for the warmer months offer versatility in styles ranging from office chic to athletically inspired. For spring, we’re eyeing flared denim, like the raw-edge style by Seven for All Mankind. Come summer, we like to slip into espadrilles to accompany crisp culottes by Edit — the perfect antidote to our skinny jeans obsession — or to team a structured top with Whistles geometric florals.  View those styles and more in the slideshow:
