British cycling apparel maker Rapha has periodically introduced limited-edition jerseys with special themes. Today’s launch of the Connie Carpenter-Phinney and the Davis Phinney jerseys, in honor of these American cycling greats, marks the company’s first special-edition jersey for women.
The long-sleeved jerseys for fall celebrate Carpenter-Phinney (top left), who captured the gold medal in the first-ever Olympic Road Race at the Los Angeles Summer Games in 1984, and her husband Davis, who won fifth in the road race and a bronze medal in the Team Time Trial, among other victories.
Carpenter-Phinney, 57, is a remarkable athlete. She was a star in rowing and speed skating (the youngest competitor ever to compete in a winter Olympics in 1972) prior to taking up track and then road biking. In the late 1970s and early ‘80s she won four World Cycling Champion competitions. Carpenter-Phinney remains an inspiration and a mentor to women cyclists today.
Married for more than 30 years, the Phinneys have two children, one of whom, Taylor, is an Olympian and a pro cyclist for BMC Racing. Davis Phinney was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2000 at age 40. Part of the proceeds of the Rapha jersey sales will benefit the Davis Phinney Foundation, which is dedicated to providing information, inspiration and resources to help people living with Parkinson’s disease.
Rapha continues to expand its apparel offerings for women and two year’s ago launched the Rapha Women’s 100, a one-day event that aims to build participation in road cycling by encouraging women anywhere around the world to ride 100 kms individually our together.
The Rapha Connie Carpenter-Phinney Jersey in a Merino wool and polyester blend, features white stripes on a blue ground and unzips in the front to reveal a red vertical stripe. The motto inside the collar reads Every Victory Counts. Inspired by a United States National Champion theme, reflective stars appear on one of three rear pockets.
The red Davis Phinney version (below) is inspired by the leader’s jersey of the Coors International Bicycle Classic, which Phinney won in its final running in 1988.
