Your NYC Cycling Events Agenda

First up on this week’s agenda: Run don’t walk to your laptop to fire up a divine slide show of the many fashionable ways in which bicycles have been depicted in the pages of Vogue over the years (above).

Saturday, August 10 – Annie Londonderry Ride for Women

“Because women are rad,”  Bicycle Habitat and We Bike NYC team up to present a women’s ride inspired by Annie Kopchovsky, who in 1894 embraced the challenge of riding her bicycle around the world in 15 months. The contemporary goal is to gather 100 women to ride Summer Streets in celebration of the joy of cycling and to inspire others along the way. The ride begins with coffee and snacks at Bicycle Habitat Soho at 8:30 a.m. and proceeds to the Park Avenue tunnel and back, with a picnic and prizes at the shop. It’s free and open to riders of all levels. Click here to register.

Register Now! Saturday, September 8 — New York Century Bike Tour

I rode this popular urban 100-miler sponsored by Transportation Alternatives for the first time last year with a small group of friends, and I loved seeing the broad variety of NYC’s neighborhoods. (Who knew parts of Queens are that green and leafy?) There are no road closures on this urban adventure, but plenty of ride marshals, mechanics and scenic stops for refreshment to support participants along the way. Routes of 15, 35, 55 and 75 miles also are available. Start and finish lines are in Central and Prospect parks. Hint: Register before August 19 to save and also to have your rider bib mailed to you. Click here for information and registration.

Reminder: Summer Streets kicks off this weekend and runs for three consecutive Saturdays. It’s a unique opportunity to savor car-free streets along an almost 7-mile stretch of Manhattan from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park, with food, art and performances, and special events at rest stops along the route. More details here. Do this!
