Bike Month NYC is your opportunity to celebrate all the joys of bicycling, whether to work, for casual spins around the neighborhood or fast rides on weekends. Now’s the perfect time to kick off the prime warm-weather cycling season by signing up for a group ride, inviting a colleague to join you on your morning commute or simply exploring the glorious city we call home.
With something for everyone, here are eight of our favorite event picks:
Sunday, May 12: CycloFemme – This Sunday – Mother’s Day – join in a global celebration to honor the past, present and future of women’s cycling by participating in a CycloFemme ride in your community. Find rides in the New York City area. Then follow and post to the #cyclofemme hashtag on twitter and Instagram for event-day coverage.
Monday, May 13: Third Annual Ride-In Movie — BYOB means bring your own blanket as Mathew Palmer Park converts to a bike-in movie theater for a free showing of the classic film The Bicycle Thief. It’s sponsored by the West 45th Street Block Association and the Clinton Hell’s Kitchen Coalition for Pedestrian Safety. More information.
Friday, May 17: Bike Home from Work Party – Cap off Bike to Work Day with a party like no other. This free after-work event, sponsored by the advocacy organization Transportation Alternatives, will offer beer, food vendors, a commuter showcase and pop-up shops, plus a fashion show of reflective wear. It’s all at the Archway under the Manhattan Bridge in DUMBO. More information.
Sunday, May 19: Campagnolo Gran Fondo New York – You’ve got to be trained up for this one, but there’s still time to register for the 105-mile cyclosportif race from NYC to Bear Mountain and back. The Gran Fondo starts on a traffic-free lower level of the George Washington Bridge and tests riders with 7,000 feet of climbing. Also check out the NYC Bike Expo, where road bikes and gear are in the spotlight the Friday and Saturday before the race.
Sunday, May 19: East Coast Greenway’s New York To City Island Ride – Enjoy a 25-mile, largely off-road ride from W. 43rd St. to City Island in the Bronx (above), traveling along the East Coast Greenway, with lunch at a local picnic spot. More information.
Wednesday, May 22: Bike Build for CYCLE Kids – The not-for-profit CYCLE Kids introduces children to the joys of cycling as it teaches healthy habits that last a lifetime. The organization is looking for some volunteers to help assemble bikes along with the kids and mechanics from Bicycle Habitat at a Brooklyn public school where the program is getting underway. E-mail here for more information: firstname.lastname@example.org
Monday, May 27: Preview Week Begins for Citi Bike Members – Sign up for an annual Citi Bike membership by May 17, and you’ll receive your key in time for a week of preview rides, beginning on May 27, Memorial Day. Membership gives you access to 6,000 bikes at 330 stations in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Register here.
Every Day: Support Cycling in NYC – So, some NIMBYish late-comers are griping about Citi Bike stations in their neighborhoods. Sure you support bike share, but are you taking action? Contact your elected officials via phone or email and tell them you support new York City’s newest affordable, accessible public transportation option. The best way to stay informed and make your voice count? Join Transportation Alternatives here: transalt.org
