With the weather as changeable as it has been in New York City lately, it’s a good idea to carry an extra layer for consistent comfort on your bike. One option is a lightweight, zip-up vest to keep your core warm on a chilly or windy morning or evening ride. Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been toting a vest in a bottle cage on the frame of my road bike for easy access (above). Fold the vest into thirds lengthwise, then roll it up, secure it with a rubber band and tuck it into the cage. Another way to enlist a seat-tube-mounted bottle cage for double duty is to cut the top off an old water bottle just below the indentation; place it into the rack and use it as a “cup” to carry a spare tube, compact pump, packaged snacks or whatever.
