Year-end is the time to make charitable contributions to the organizations that work hard all year long on behalf of meaningful causes. For people who love to ride bikes (that’s us!) donating to local organizations that help make streets safer, inform and educate the public, and engage the next generation in cycling is a great way to say thank you for everything they do and to help sustain and build their programs for the year ahead. And what a year 2012 will be with the arrival in New York City of the nation’s largest bike share program!
As you log onto your laptop or reach for your checkbook, remember that your employer may offer a matching program, so be sure to inquire at work. Also, the holidays tend to be a popular time for challenge grants. When there’s one in effect, you can feel extra good about your gift reaching even further.
Here are a couple of suggestions:
- Transportation Alternatives (photo above) – The leading transportation advocates in New York City, T.A. and its huge network of supporters are on the front lines every day working toward safer, more liveable streets on behalf of cyclists, pedestrians and public transit riders. They sponsor events that celebrate the streets, including the NYC Century Bike Tour, and their great team of Bicycle Ambassadors help encourage safe cycling throughout the boroughs. This holiday season, thanks to a major challenge grant from a local foundation, donations to T.A. are matched through Dec. 31. Click here to contribute.
- Recycle-A-Bicycle – This organization focuses on the bicycle as a means of empowering youth. RAB provides vocational training in bicycle mechanics, as well as environmental education. Last year, RAB youth refurbished 500 bicycles (sold at two community-based storefronts), pedaled 10,000 miles and burned 1.5 million calories. Their 2nd Annual Youth Bike Summit is coming up in NYC on January 13 – 15. Click here to make a gift.
- Streetsblog and Streetfilms – These are timely online sources of news, commentary and videos that help spread the word and make the case for safer streets and alternative transportation. From the Prospect Park West bike lane to Capitol Hill and beyond, Streetsblog and Streetsfilms have the world of sustainable transportation covered for you. Click here to donate.
Finally, don’t forget to share your favorite causes with friends directly or via social media. Often, people are looking for suggestions at this time of year!
velojoy.com is proud to have made gifts to the organizations above.
