Summer Streets and the Living is Easy

Summer Streets returns for its fourth season this weekend, closing Park Avenue and connecting streets from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. for three consecutive Saturdays (Aug. 6, 13, 20). There’ll be no dumpster pools this year, but those with a yen for the beach can check out sandboxes and sand-castle building by Matt Long of Sand Masters at Foley Square. Presented by the New York City Department of Transportation in partnership with other city agencies and private sponsors, Summer Streets offers activities for participants of all ages. But the biggest attraction is cycling, walking and running on New York City streets free of automobile congestion, noise and fumes. Read my post about last year’s ride. Information and map.

Cyclists’ Happy Hour with Let’s Go Ride a BikeThursday Night!

Let’s Go Ride a Bike is one of my favorite blogs about city cycling for transportation, recreation and flat-out fun. Meet the talented duo behind LGRAB, Dottie (based in Chicago) and Trisha (Nashville), at a Cyclists’ Happy Hour tonight from 6 – 7:30 p.m. hosted by Adeline Adeline, 147 Reade Street in Manhattan. Toast city cycling, enjoy a bite to eat and take a test ride around the block on a beautiful city bike.

Levi’s + Urban Outfitters Launch Mobile Bike Shop at Ace Hotel

Levi’s is partnering with Urban Outfitters to celebrate the launch of its Commuter line of men’s pants, jeans and jackets for urban cyclists with a national “Get in the Saddle Tour.” The tour kicks off from 6 – 9 p.m. Friday at the Ace Hotel, 20 W. 29th St. in Manhattan, and the free festivities continue through Sunday. Enjoy concerts featuring the Antlers and Unknown Mortal Orchestra, a bike photography exhibit by Michael Kim, short films curated by the Bicycle Film Festival and the roll-out of a mobile bike shop that will travel the U.S (tune-ups, giveaways and tailoring!)

Late-Night Ride Through the Lincoln Tunnel

The 5 Boro Bike Club, which offers a wide array of cycling events for all levels, has a Lincoln Tunnel ride on the books for this Saturday. Meet at Chelsea Piers at 9:30 p.m. for a 23-mile ride, one leg of which is a trip through the tunnel. Read complete information on the club’s events page.

Parking Scofflaws Beware…

News that the mayor of Vilnius, capital of Lithuania, had driven a tank over an illegally parked luxury car to drive home a point about scofflaw behavior in that city might not be the usual grist for local news…except that it led to calls in the #bikenyc twitter stream for Mayor Michael Bloomberg to follow suit.

On that note, enJOY your weekend!
