I can generally claim pretty good contest karma. The trusty Kona road bike that I ride around town every day came into my life via the last-minute purchase of a $10 raffle ticket. Sadly though (boo hoo!), my mojo deserted me when a name other than mine was drawn as the winner of this bedazzled Biomega CPH bicycle by David Byrne.
It was the centerpiece of a recent fundraiser for Exit Art, a not-for-profit gallery at Tenth Avenue and 36th Street committed to organizing experimental exhibitions and programs. Invited by a friend to attend, I was drawn to the novelty of the gallery’s choice. Well, that and the possibility of winning.
The bicycle, encrusted with 12,000 Swarovski crystals, is signed on the headset by Byrne, co-founder of the group Talking Heads, long-time cyclist and author of the book Bicycle Diaries.
Audrey Christensen, associate director of Exit Art, who conceived the project and enlisted Byrne’s participation, says it was consistent with gallery programming that accentuates sustainability and social consciousness. (Check out the exhibition Autotopia, an exploration of the history of alternative vehicles, before it closes Aug. 5!)
Congratulations to Sinclaire Marber, who rolled away with the bedazzled bike.
